The Invincible universe expands with the upcoming 3v3 tag fighting game, Invincible VS. Set to launch next year, the game features many beloved characters such as Mark Grayson (Invincible), Rex Splode, and Omni-Man. However, a new fighter is joining the roster, a character fans may not have anticipated.
Ella Mental, an entirely new original character, was unveiled at The Game Awards. Created by Invincible co-creators Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, she is expected to significantly impact the game’s universe. Skybound’s in-house game development studio, Quarter Up, has brought Ella to life and is now offering an extended look at her capabilities.
Ella Mental is characterized by her positive and energetic demeanor, often being the first to address challenges. As the heiress to her family’s fortune, her humble and diligent nature earned her grandfather’s favor, granting her access to an ancient totem that is the source of her powers. Unique within the Invincible universe, Ella possesses the ability to control all four elements: earth, water, fire, and air.
Drawing energy from the elements, Ella exhibits a highly versatile move set. She primarily functions as a ranged fighter, utilizing her Elemental Auras to adapt her combat strategy and enhance her Special Moves, which are potent in battle. Her Earth Wall ability conjures a floating mass of earth that can either be shattered for a shotgun-like attack or used defensively as cover. With Water Needle, Ella generates and compresses water to unleash it as a projectile. Flame Burst summons a cloud of flames that linger before detonating in a significant explosion. Ella is equipped to defeat any opponent, whether attacking from the air, ground, or with her special abilities.
The origin story of Ella Mental is distinctive. The development team considered it an exciting prospect to introduce an original character into Invincible VS, and when the idea was presented to Robert Kirkman, he enthusiastically approved.
Robert Kirkman stated, “This concept provided Cory Walker and me with an opportunity to create a new character. The entry point for the character was a somewhat whimsical name: Ella Mental. It seemed to fit the Invincible-style naming convention.”
Following this, Cory Walker provided an impressive initial sketch for the character.
Cory Walker explained, “The name originated with Robert, which then led to the element-based powerset. The design process involved adding various elements, with an emphasis on asymmetry and an overall cool aesthetic.”
In a departure from many characters in the Invincible universe, Ella’s parents are portrayed as kind. This intentional decision by Robert Kirkman further distinguishes her as an addition to the roster. Kirkman remarked during Ella’s backstory development, “The Invincible universe often features characters with terrible parents, so the goal was to give Ella supportive parents and a positive family dynamic.”
Integrating Ella into the game presented a welcome challenge. With attacks involving all four elements, the on-screen action is extensive, and care was taken to ensure her gameplay is visually impressive without compromising performance.
Visionary rapper Tierra Whack provides the voice for Ella Mental. Her talent and presence were deemed ideal for the character. Whack is also a significant fan of Invincible, and her enthusiasm is evident in her voice work. Her preferred team combination includes Ella Mental, Rex Splode, and Atom Eve.
To excel as Ella Mental, players should dedicate time to understanding her abilities and mastering her attack ranges. She pairs effectively with Robot for juggling opponents and with Atom Eve for a substantial power boost.
