The manga series The 31st Consort, created by Momotomoe, Tsubasa Nanaki, and Nanao Yamashita, is generally considered a lighthearted shojo story. Although a competition exists for King Macron’s affection among 31 potential consorts, Felia is quickly established as the favored choice. Her widespread popularity and the already strong relationship between her and the King by the second volume meant minimal romantic tension leading into the third. However, this installment introduces a genuine threat to Felia’s life and a new antagonist. Despite this, Felia consistently maintains her established personality, even when facing a deadly situation.
Spoilers for volume 3 of The 31st Consort manga are included below.
Volume three of The 31st Consort largely focuses on the danger posed by Duke Goethe and his chosen queen candidate, Lady Sabrina, reducing the typical shojo romantic elements. Instead, the narrative highlights Felia’s spirited and perceptive nature as a protagonist. This allows readers to observe her talent for gaining allies, evaluating circumstances, and resolving issues in her distinctive manner. Although not formally trained as a “lady” like her mentor Curie or rival Sabrina, Felia demonstrates remarkable intelligence and resourcefulness.
The story then showcases Felia’s resolve, resilience, and intellect. When Lady Curie warns her about Sabrina’s threat, Felia readily accepts the challenge. Despite the prospect of poison at a tea party, she understands that retreat is not an option. Felia and Curie decide to confront the situation. Following discussions with her teacher and assistant, the scheme becomes clear: Sabrina collaborated with the palace housekeeper, who harbored resentment towards Felia’s origins, to position a young, bullied maid named Nell within the household. Nell is tasked with holding Sabrina’s poison.
Nevertheless, Felia perceives Nell not as malicious, but as a potentially good individual caught in a frightening predicament, fearing for her safety. Consequently, Felia treats Nell with the same compassion she extends to anyone in her care. She offers tea, engages in conversation, and even after observing the vial of poison, returns it to Nell.
During the actual party, Felia demonstrates her authentic self while skillfully managing the crisis. This scene is truly exceptional. To preserve the element of surprise for readers, specific details will be omitted. However, Felia initially confronts Sabrina about the situation and past bullying. She then leverages an opening to expose Nell’s “lie” regarding the poison being liquid smelling salts, suggesting their potential use on Sabrina. Ultimately, Felia orchestrates a scenario that makes everyone present aware of the potential danger, effectively preventing future attempts.
The 31st Consort consistently portrays its characters, with Felia remaining steadfast and insightful. Her brilliance and preparedness are constant, yet a significant aspect of her success stems from her practical approach and relatable demeanor, making her an approachable and positive presence.
Volumes 1-3 of The 31st Consort are currently available from Yen Press. A release date for the fourth volume has not yet been announced.
