The Retro 87 keyboard features UV-coated ABS keycaps and Kailh Jellyfish X transparent switches, providing a satisfying feel and sound, particularly for those who prefer clicky keyboards. Kailh’s box switches are designed to be dust and splash-resistant, ensuring a consistent typing experience. This keyboard also includes customizable RGB backlighting with eight distinct lighting modes. Consistent with other 8BitDo keyboards, the Retro 87 has a hot-swappable PCB and a detachable Super Button module. These two large microswitch buttons can be remapped instantly, and the Super Button module’s casing is also transparent green.
An integrated Xbox Guide button activates the Xbox overlay menu on PC. The four arrow keys are color-matched to the face buttons of official Xbox controllers (green, red, blue, and yellow). Users can customize keybindings, create macros, and adjust RGB lighting effects using 8BitDo’s Ultimate Software V2, available on PC, Mac, and mobile platforms.
Compatibility for the Retro 87 extends to Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Steam Deck, Asus ROG Xbox Ally, and other devices. Wireless connectivity is supported via 2.4GHz or Bluetooth, and a detachable green USB-C charging cable allows for wired use. The 4,000mAh rechargeable battery provides up to 300 hours of use with lighting effects off, and approximately 25-30 hours with RGB backlighting enabled.

The Retro R8 mouse features an ambidextrous design, incorporating four extra programmable buttons, with two on each side. These additional buttons mirror the color scheme of the Xbox controller’s face buttons, similar to the Retro 87’s directional keys. Equipped with Kailh Sword GM X microswitches and a PAW 3395 26K DPI optical sensor, the Retro R8 offers six distinct sensitivity levels. DPI and other configurations can be fine-tuned using the Ultimate Software V2.
This mouse connects to PC, Mac, and Android devices wirelessly through Bluetooth or a 2.4GHz connection using the provided dongle. The USB-A dongle can be conveniently stored within the mouse or its magnetic charging dock. For wired use, a green USB-C cable is included, which also serves for charging. The Retro R8 can be charged directly without the dock, making it portable. It boasts a maximum polling rate of 8,000Hz in wired mode and 4,000Hz via 2.4GHz wireless.

8BitDo Retro Mechanical Wireless Keyboards & Mice

For those interested in alternative retro designs, numerous other 8BitDo wireless keyboards are currently discounted on Amazon. Most 8BitDo keyboards draw inspiration from classic game consoles or computers, such as the NES-inspired N Edition, the Famicom-inspired Fami Edition, and the Commodore 64-themed C64 Edition.
Similar to the Xbox Edition, these models offer wireless connectivity to PC, Mac, and mobile devices via 2.4GHz or Bluetooth. Each keyboard includes a Super Button module and integrates with Ultimate Software for key remapping, macro creation, and other setting adjustments.
The C64 Edition features a detachable Super Stick, an arcade stick, in addition to the Super Buttons. The Super Stick is also part of the Best Buy-exclusive N Edition bundle, priced at $70 (originally $100).
While the previously mentioned keyboards are tenkeyless (TKL), 8BitDo also offers complementary wireless numpads that function as calculators. Full-size versions of the NES and Fami models are available on Amazon, with the NES-inspired full-size keyboard currently discounted by $30.
