A recent Steam Deck Beta update from Valve introduces an important enhancement for Xbox controller detection.
Modern Xbox controllers often encounter Bluetooth connectivity issues with SteamOS and Linux systems unless their firmware is up-to-date. This update addresses a common support concern by directly highlighting this requirement. Although it is a Steam Deck Beta Client update, its functionality is expected to extend to other SteamOS devices.
Key changes noted in the changelog include:
General
- Within the Bluetooth settings, the system will now identify and inform users attempting to pair or connect an Xbox controller with outdated firmware that prevents proper connection to the Steam Deck. Resolving these issues requires connecting the controller to a Windows PC and updating its firmware using the Xbox Accessories App.
Accessibility
- The Screen Reader’s “Stop Talking” button has been relocated to the X button, allowing external gamepads to access the Quick Access Menu using the Guide button combined with their A button equivalent.
Friends & Chat
- Users can now report suspicious or harassing group chat messages directly from the chat window by selecting the message and pressing ‘Options’. The reporting process offers options to block or unfriend the other user.
Remote Play
- An issue preventing mouse movement to a different monitor when utilizing touch controls on the Steam Link app has been resolved.
While it is inconvenient that a Windows PC is required for the firmware update, many controllers are compatible with Steam Input and SteamOS.
Valve may eventually need to rename these updates, perhaps to “SteamOS Client update,” considering the increasing number of official SteamOS devices, such as the Legion Go S, and upcoming Valve hardware like the Steam Frame and Steam Machine.
