GE-Proton, previously known as Proton-GE, functions as a compatibility layer designed to enable Windows games to run on Linux-based systems such as SteamOS and Steam Deck. This tool can sometimes offer improved game compatibility compared to Valve’s standard Proton. Here is a guide on how to install it.
For those unfamiliar with the various Proton versions, an explainer guide is available. While a separate guide exists for installing additional applications, the necessary steps are included here for convenience.
To access the on-screen keyboard on Steam Deck, press STEAM + X simultaneously.
Accessing Desktop Mode
On a SteamOS system, boot into Desktop Mode through the Power menu. The following images illustrate this process on a Steam Deck running SteamOS 3.6:

A “Return to Gaming Mode” shortcut will be present on the Desktop, allowing a quick return to the main Steam Gaming Mode interface.
Once in Desktop Mode, locate the Discover application. This can be done by tapping the bottom-left button to open the desktop menu. Alternatively, Discover might appear as a blue shopping bag icon on the bottom bar.

Installing ProtonUp-Qt
The next step involves installing ProtonUp-Qt, an application that simplifies the installation of various compatibility layers. Search for “ProtonUp-Qt” within the Discover application.

Launching ProtonUp-Qt and Installing GE-Proton
After installation, ProtonUp-Qt can be launched directly from Discover or found in the Utilities menu via the bottom-left app menu.
Verify that “Steam” is selected at the top, as it is usually the default. Then, click “Add version” to reveal a list from which GE-Proton can be selected.

Proceed by tapping “Install.” Allow the process to complete until GE-Proton appears in the main list.

With GE-Proton installed, the next step is to configure a game to use it.
To ensure GE-Proton appears, either close and restart Steam or return to Gaming Mode.
Configuring a Game to Use GE-Proton
Within Gaming Mode, navigate to any game in the Library. For instance, using Path of Exile 2 as an example, access its Properties by selecting the cog icon on the right.

From the game’s properties, select the “Compatibility” menu on the left. Check the box labeled “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” to enable the selection of a different Proton version for the game.
Checking this box will reveal a drop-down menu, which might display a default Proton version like “Proton 9.0-4” in the provided screenshot. Tap this menu to open a list of all installed Proton versions.

Once selected, the configuration is complete.
These steps cover the complete process for installing GE-Proton and assigning it to a specific game.
Updating GE-Proton
Updating GE-Proton requires a manual process each time a new version is released. However, an update may not be necessary if the game continues to function well with the currently selected version. If an update is desired, simply repeat the installation steps outlined above for the new version.
