Ubisoft continues development on The Division 3, more than two years after its announcement. Despite no gameplay reveals, the lead developer believes the game will achieve a similar impact to that of The Division 1.
The Division 1 garnered significant attention following its E3 2013 announcement. After several delays, it launched on March 8, 2016, setting new sales records for Ubisoft. Its sequel, The Division 2, released in 2019, but did not achieve the same initial impact as the first installment.
A release date for The Division 3 remains unconfirmed, though there is anticipation for a reveal this year. Julian Gerighty, executive producer for The Division franchise at Massive Entertainment, recently offered a concise update.
During the New Game+ Showcase 2026, Gerighty confirmed that The Division 3 is in production and described it as “shaping up to be a monster.” He added that the team at Massive is “working extremely hard on something that… will be as big an impact as Division 1 was.”
This statement suggests Ubisoft’s ambition for The Division 3 to evoke the success and excitement of The Division 1, which generated significant buzz and strong sales upon release. The company faces considerable pressure to deliver, particularly given its recent challenges.
Concurrently, The Division 2 continues to receive updates, and a mobile game adaptation is nearing completion by a team in Paris. The free-to-play spin-off, The Division Heartland, was in development since 2020 but was canceled in 2024.
Recently, Massive Entertainment implemented a ‘voluntary career transition program,’ involving voluntary layoffs, to sharpen its focus on The Division franchise and the Snowdrop game engine. This initiative is part of broader restructuring at Ubisoft, which has included studio closures and layoffs. The studio’s 2024 release, Star Wars Outlaws, reportedly underperformed in sales for Ubisoft, despite substantial investment in its development and marketing.
