In early 2024, Valve introduced new rules for game developers on Steam, requiring them to provide information about generative AI use. These rules have now been updated with further clarifications.
As observed by GameDiscoverCo and shared on Bluesky, the developer disclosure form has undergone several wording adjustments. The primary aim of these changes is to specify that the disclosure applies to content actually seen and consumed by players. This encompasses everything from marketing materials on the Steam page to in-game content, but it does not include AI tools used by developers within their game development environment. Valve’s updated form now states:
“Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section. Instead, it is concerned with the use of AI in creating content that ships with your game, and is consumed by players. This includes content such as artwork, sound, narrative, localization, etc.”
The policy specifically targets player-facing content, with separate sections for developers to indicate whether AI content is pre-generated or live-generated. Developers are still required to provide a statement detailing AI usage for display on the Steam store page.
This clarification appears to be a sensible adjustment. Users can also continue to utilize the AI browser extension to better identify games on Steam that incorporate generative AI.
