While many modern games provide a wide array of graphics customization options, Nioh 3 on PS5 and PS5 Pro simplifies the choice to two distinct settings: Prioritize FPS or Prioritize Resolution.
The game is available on PlayStation consoles and PC, with PlayStation users facing a straightforward decision between targeting a higher frame rate or a sharper resolution.
The Visuals setting can be found under System > Visuals within the main menu. It is important to note that changes can only be made from this menu. Neither of the available modes offers a completely flawless experience. Below is a detailed breakdown of the optimal graphics modes for both PS5 and PS5 Pro.
Best PS5 Visuals Mode for Nioh 3
The PS5 version of Nioh 3 presents two modes with clear objectives. Prioritize FPS aims for 60 frames per second, likely utilizing a dynamic resolution. Prioritize Resolution, conversely, targets a 4K resolution with a fixed 30fps cap.
Neither mode is without its drawbacks. Prioritize FPS generally maintains 60fps, but certain enemy encounters can cause noticeable dips below this target. A display equipped with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology can largely mitigate these framerate inconsistencies.
For those bothered by framerate fluctuations, the Prioritize Resolution mode offers a 4K image at 30fps. However, this mode suffers from poor frame pacing, leading to minor stutters, particularly when rotating the camera in various environments.
If a VRR-capable display is available, selecting Prioritize FPS mode is the recommended choice for Nioh 3 on PS5. VRR effectively smooths out most framerate variations, whereas the frame pacing issues in Prioritize Resolution mode currently lack a solution.
Best PS5 Pro Visuals Mode for Nioh 3
The situation on the PS5 Pro is similar to the base PS5, though with improved results as expected from the more powerful hardware. Again, Prioritize FPS targets 60fps with dynamic resolution, and Prioritize Resolution aims for 4K at a 30fps cap.
The Prioritize FPS mode on PS5 Pro maintains 60fps much more consistently than on the standard PS5. While some minor drops can still occur, even with VRR (such as during stealth attack animations), this mode offers a significantly more stable performance experience.
Prioritize Resolution on the PS5 Pro delivers undeniably sharp and excellent image quality. However, frame pacing stutters persist, albeit improved compared to the base console. The increased processing power has not fully resolved this particular issue.
Even with the PS5 Pro being a powerful console, not all games run perfectly. For players with a PS5 Pro and a VRR-enabled display, Prioritize FPS is the optimal selection. This mode may also be the better option even without VRR, at least until a frame pacing fix is implemented for the resolution mode.
