Team Cherry surprised fans after The Game Awards with a wave of announcements, revealing major news for both Hollow Knight and Silksong, led by the free expansion Sea of Sorrow.
Sea of Sorrow Is Silksong’s First Free Expansion
Team Cherry did not take the stage at The Game Awards 2025 despite all the awards and reveals. Instead, the Australian studio chose to share its news in its own way, and it turned out to be a big one.
For starters, we now know that Silksong’s first free expansion is called Sea of Sorrow. It already has an official trailer packed with early details, confirming that Hornet’s journey is far from over.
As explained on the studio’s official blog, Team Cherry made it clear just how important Silksong has become.
“More than 7 million players have bought the game, with millions more playing through Xbox Game Pass,” the team revealed.
For the developers, this success goes far beyond what they ever expected.
“Your continued enthusiasm is a huge motivation as we keep working to expand the game even further,” they added.
The studio shared the trailer for Sea of Sorrow, along with a first look at what’s coming. The expansion promises new areas, new bosses, new tools, and more, all wrapped in a nautical-themed adventure.
“Hornet’s journey continues in our seafaring expansion,” Team Cherry teased.
Best of all, Sea of Sorrow will be completely free for all Silksong players when it launches next year.
As usual, the studio is keeping most details under wraps for now, asking fans for a bit more patience as they slowly reveal more information.
PC Improvements and More Announcements
PC players were not forgotten. A new update is already live, adding 16:10 and 21:9 resolutions, perfect for Steam Deck users and ultra-wide monitors.
Hollow Knight Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Also Revealed
And no, the announcements did not stop with Silksong.
Team Cherry also revealed Hollow Knight: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, a new version of the original game featuring all previous updates and technical improvements introduced on Nintendo platforms.
Players can expect higher resolutions, smoother performance with high FPS modes, and additional visual effects. Just like before, anyone who already owns Hollow Knight on the original Nintendo Switch will be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version for free.
Between Sea of Sorrow, Silksong’s first free expansion, and the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Hollow Knight, Team Cherry has once again caught fans completely off guard with one of its biggest announcements yet.
