Fishing is a common activity in many survival games, and Hytale offers its own unique method. This guide explains how to fish in Hytale.
Can You Fish in Hytale?
Players can fish in Hytale, but not with traditional fishing rods or a dedicated minigame. Instead, fish are primarily caught using crafted traps or by directly attacking them in shallow areas. A proper fishing experience with rods can be introduced via community-made mods.
How to Catch Fish in Hytale
Fishing Traps are the main method for catching fish in Hytale. These traps are crafted at a Farmer’s Workbench. First, create a Farmer’s Workbench from your standard Workbench, then upgrade it to Level 2. This upgrade requires 50 Essence of Life, 5 Wheat, 5 Lettuce, and 5 Softwood Trunks, and it unlocks both Fishing Traps and Fishing Bait. Essence of Life can be acquired efficiently by learning how to farm in Hytale.
Crafting each Fishing Trap requires 10 Any Wood, 50 Essence of Life, 20 Plant Fibers, and 1 Iron Ingot. While the initial cost may seem high, Fishing Traps are a permanent item and are not consumed with use, making them a valuable long-term investment.

After crafting a Fishing Trap, players can also create and add Fishing Bait. While not mandatory, bait improves the chances of catching rarer fish. Place the Fishing Trap in a body of water and return after approximately half a day. Interact with the trap to retrieve any fish it has captured.
Fish are available in various rarities, with rarer catches yielding more Fish Meat. For instance, Legendary rarity fish provide 16 Fish Meat, which can be cooked and consumed.

Another method involves manually attacking and catching fish in shallow waters where they appear. This approach is less efficient but serves as a basic way to acquire fish.
Tips for Fishing in Hytale
Fish typically do not spawn in shallow or player-created water sources. To ensure successful fishing, seek out naturally occurring bodies of water that are at least 4 blocks deep, allowing for full submersion. Rivers and oceans are excellent locations for consistent fish generation.
While not essential, using bait can increase both the frequency and rarity of fish caught. Fishing Traps will still function effectively without bait.
Currently, known fish in Hytale include:
- Catfish
- Clownfish
- Corrupted Fish
- Fish (Disambiguation)
- Man-O-War
- Moray Eel
- Pike
- Piranha
- Pufferfish
- Rainbow Trout
- Regal Tang
- Shark
Hytale Fishing Mods
Although traditional fishing is not a core feature in Hytale, the Gone Fishing mod introduces fishing rods to the game. This mod is available on CurseForge and can be installed by following a modding guide.
With the mod, a fishing rod can be crafted using 2 Sticks and 3 Linen Scraps. To use it, equip the rod and right-click while aiming at water to cast a bobber. When a fish is ready to be caught, the bobber will be pulled underwater, and another right-click will reel it in. The mod allows players to catch any fish found in the base game.
