Hyperslice recently launched and has quickly become a standout arena-arcade action roguelite.
Players repeatedly upgrade a small ship while eliminating enemies in confined arenas across multiple waves. The action can become quite intense and chaotic, resembling a bullet hell experience in later stages. However, it is not a traditional shoot ’em up, as there are no primary firing weapons. Instead, the ship itself serves as the weapon; players must bump and dash through foes to slice them, accumulating points throughout each run. This gameplay style shares similarities with titles like Geometry Wars and the acclaimed Sektori, but without the continuous projectile firing.
Developer MrEliptik accurately characterizes the game as an “action arena roguelite.”
The gameplay is highly focused, intense, and exceptionally enjoyable, offering a significant challenge. From the outset, players have little time to strategize. While not initially blistering fast, the pace is sufficient to maintain engagement, leading to later waves that introduce additional game mechanics.
The core mechanic involves bumping into enemies to stun them, remove their shields, or transform them into projectiles, followed by a dash to slice and destroy them. The game’s appeal lies in how it expands on this concept with diverse enemy types introduced across various waves. Some enemies may require eliminating linked foes first, while large bombs and rocks entering the arena from off-screen can quickly end a run if players fail to evade or destroy them.
Additionally, the game introduces stationary turret-like enemies that fire large, tracking laser beams across the compact arena. Spinning blades also traverse the space, attempting to cut players as they dash to clear other obstacles. This demands constant movement and complete player focus.
As progress is made, players can unlock ship upgrades and abilities, such as increased health or a stronger bump. Further variety comes from unlocking additional ship types, each featuring different ultimate abilities, speed, and health attributes.
Priced at £5.89, the game offers excellent value. It provides straightforward, enjoyable gameplay. Those who appreciate a challenge and games with quick play sessions will find it appealing.
