This guide explains how to update DXVK or VKD3D-Proton versions within Valve’s official Proton or community versions such as GE-Proton.
Manual updates are generally not necessary, as official Proton and GE-Proton releases automatically include the latest DXVK and VKD3D-Proton versions. However, users who prefer to experiment with new releases can perform these upgrades at their own discretion.
The process involves replacing existing DXVK or VKD3D-Proton files with the latest release downloads. Proton installations are typically located in the following paths, depending on your Steam Library setup:
- For Proton 9 and Proton Experimental:
path-to-your/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Proton x.x/files - For Proton 8 and older versions:
path-to-your/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Proton x.x/dist - For GE-Proton (e.g., GE-Proton 9-20):
~/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton9-20/files
(Where “x.x” represents the specific Proton version being modified.)
Within these directories, locate the “lib” and “lib64” folders, which correspond to 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, respectively. Inside each, navigate to the “wine” folder, then into the “dxvk” and “vkd3d-proton” folders. This is where the d3d12.dll files should be replaced with their newer versions. If an issue arises, a clean reinstallation can be achieved by deleting the “/dist” or “/files” folder and then verifying the game files through Steam.
