Take-Two Interactive has announced that the development of Borderlands 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2 console has been put on hold.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the Gearbox shooter faced an unexpected delay last September, just a week before its scheduled October 3 release. At the time, the developer cited the need for additional development time. All digital pre-orders for the game were subsequently canceled, aligning with Nintendo’s eShop policies.
Following this, Borderlands 4 for Nintendo Switch 2 has been completely removed from publisher Take-Two’s latest release schedule. This action strongly indicates that the version has been effectively canceled.
A Take-Two spokesperson informed Variety that the company made the “difficult decision to pause development on that SKU.” The spokesperson added that the focus remains on delivering quality post-launch content and optimizing the game for existing platforms.
Despite this, Take-Two stated its continued collaboration with Nintendo, highlighting upcoming titles like ‘PGA Tour 2K25′ and ‘WWE 2K26’ for Switch 2, and expressed enthusiasm for bringing more titles to the platform in the future.
Borderlands 4 launched for PS5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC in September, reportedly attracting over 2.5 million players. However, Take-Two noted “softer” sales than anticipated shortly after release, partly attributed to performance issues on PC.
A review of Borderlands 4 described it as a strong RPG shooter with rewarding and engaging gameplay. While some elements, such as new characters and the grappling hook, were considered less impactful, the overall enjoyment derived from the game was highlighted.
