Video game adaptations are increasingly popular, and another one is on the way. Isabela Merced, known for her roles in The Last of Us and Alien: Romulus, has been cast in an upcoming film based on Sega’s popular franchise, The House of the Dead.
Paul W.S. Anderson was previously announced as the director for this adaptation. Anderson has a history with successful video game films, having directed the original Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil movies, along with several later installments in the Resident Evil series. His involvement suggests a strong vision for bringing the 1997 game to the big screen.
In a statement, Anderson expressed his enthusiasm: “The House of the Dead is a game I have loved for many years, and I’m beyond thrilled to be bringing this to the big screen with such an exciting talent as Isabela at its heart.” He also mentioned plans for a potential tentpole franchise to delve into Sega’s extensive lore.
As a horror shooter, The House of the Dead is notable for pioneering the concept of fast-moving zombies in video games, a feature that has since influenced numerous other games and films.
Specific details about Merced’s character are not yet available. However, given that players in the game typically assume the roles of AMS agents—an organization dealing with global conspiracies—it is possible she will portray a similar character. Further information is expected in due course.
Anderson is also producing this new adaptation alongside Sega executive Toru Nakahara, and Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson from Story Kitchen. Jeremy Bolt, a producer from Anderson’s initial Resident Evil film, is also involved in production, with Merced taking on an executive producer role. The project is slated for international sale at the upcoming European Film Market.
Nakahara also commented, stating, “Working with Isabela is a thrilling opportunity as she embodies the heroine character perfectly, bringing dynamic energy to the production.” He added that the team is “dedicated to crafting a visually striking and immersive experience by introducing compelling actors and terrifying creatures that will bring the House of the Dead universe to life on the big screen,” and expressed eagerness to “deliver an electrifying cinematic journey for the franchise’s fans” given their experience with video game adaptations.
