Starsand Island has significantly evolved since its initial development. The game’s early access version presents a much more cohesive experience compared to earlier builds. While some features are still pending and balancing adjustments are needed, the overall presentation feels more complete and ready for players.
For those unfamiliar, Starsand Island centers on a character who moves to a rural community with existing family ties to begin a new life. After inheriting a home and receiving assistance from a friend named Solara, the character embarks on a journey to become an active member of the community.
A notable improvement in the early access build of Starsand Island is the expanded scope of its professions. Crafting, Exploration, Farming, Fishing, and Ranching now feel considerably more developed. Farming and fishing, in particular, offer greater variety in their yields, while ranching includes more animal husbandry options. Additionally, a wider array of recipes is available for crafting. These professions appear quite comprehensive, suggesting players can engage deeply with them even before the game’s full launch.
Certain professions, especially Farming and Ranching, are particularly engaging in this build. Players can easily establish themselves, with a good selection of crops and animals available. Hybrid options are possible with dedicated play, and greenhouses are already implemented. Reaching Expert Rancher status, for instance, grants access to alpacas and ostriches, which provide valuable eggs, feathers, and wool, and are also rideable. The DNA system further supports breeding efforts. However, the combat system within exploration still requires refinement. While bows offer a ranged weapon option, there is a need for more enemy types and additional mechanics, such as dodging.
Beyond professions, the relationship system in Starsand Island, encompassing both animals and people, also feels well-developed. The pet adoption mechanic is reminiscent of titles like Harvest Moon: Animal Parade, where players can befriend and adopt wild animals by reaching a three-heart relationship level, rather than simply purchasing them.

The human relationship aspect in Starsand Island also appears quite robust. The game features 15 potential love interests, split between 8 bachelorettes and 7 bachelors, who have some voice acting, though it is currently limited. These characters appear frequently in quests and interactions, encouraging daily engagement and gift-giving. While some characters currently feel a bit underdeveloped, future updates are expected to enhance their depth. The development team has indicated further improvements to the dating system are planned for April 2026, with hopes for marriage and children options in the endgame.
Despite the progress, some aspects of Starsand Island still require balancing and refinement, as acknowledged on the game’s Steam product page and roadmap. Improved performance is desired, particularly when using mounts or items like skateboards. Some character models could also benefit from adjustments. Building up a house and land currently takes a significant amount of time, and the system doesn’t yet seem optimized for creating extensive complexes capable of housing a romantic partner. Future updates may include rebalancing progression and development, especially given the strength of the crafting system compared to earlier builds.
Starsand Island is making steady progress, with its early access version demonstrating considerable improvements over initial builds. Most professions within the game are more complete, though exploration could still benefit from further additions and adjustments. The romance system is becoming more viable, and pet adoption offers an enjoyable experience. While some rebalancing would be advantageous, the game’s foundation for its eventual 1.0 release appears quite stable.
Starsand Island is currently available in early access on PC and Xbox Series X as of February 11, 2026. A full launch, which will also include Switch 2 and PS5 versions, is scheduled for Summer 2026.
